When somebody invents a sport involving a ball shaped like a foot, then I reckon it can be indignant about other sports claiming to be “football”. Until then, delight in it as one example of the rich cultural diversity of the human race.

    Go Steelers!

This comes up so often here it’s ludicrously dull. The word football has NEVER been used to describe games that use the foot only to go a ball. In fact, I don’t even know of such a game, since soccer most certainly involves the use of hands.

The word football is part of the title of numerous games, including Association Football (i.e., soccer), American Football, Canadian Football, Gaelic Football, Australian Rules Football, Rugby Union Football, Rugby League Football. With the exclusion of the two rugby codes, nearly all of these are referred to simply as football in the countries where they predominate. Australia is particularly confusing, since in that country soccer, Aussie rules, Rugby Union and Rugby League are ALL referred to as football.

Football is the world game. Unknown really cares about American gridiron outside of America. The Americans call their game football because it sounds a bit better that calling it men in spandex tights.
