Obviously speed is essential, but timing is everything, more so than any other base. A runner has to start long before the ball leaves the pitcher's hand to beat the throw, or at least the catcher's reaction, to the plate. Rickey only stole home a few times, less than 6, in his career. It isn't done as often in the modern era for some reason, I think sabermetrics. The percentage of success is so small it's not done as often any more. You look at the names of players with 10+ steals of home and none of them are really considered "modern" players. He is followed by Max Carey (33), George Burns (28), and Honus Wagner (27). Rickey Henderson stole 1406 bases in his career with only 4 of them being home plate.
